Letter F – The Rainbow Fish


  Read the F page in Dr. Seuss’s ABC book. Emphasize the /f/ sound by saying f-f-fish. What other things start with?

Next read The Rainbow Fish. Invite students to listen for the F sound and to also look for big F and little f in the book. When finished, asked the kids what words they heard or saw that start with F. The Rainbow Fish

Arts-Infused Activities

Letter Recognition/Sensory – Ss make a big F and/or little f by drawing the letter in the air. Then students collaborate to make an F with their bodies. Next they make an F with goldfish crackers or swedish fish. They can follow a printed letter pattern such as this one www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/blog/2012/12/a-z-do-a-dot-worksheets.html if needed, or can do it on their own. They put the apples on top of the letter to become familiar with the shape of the letter. Example: ….is forthcoming

Reading/Art – Make a fish and letter F combined!


Art activity: Make a big F and/or little f.

Science –  Ocean Animals

Look through the pictures in the book. Discuss all the ocean animals Ss can see.

Dance/music activity: Have students move like each animal: fish, octopus, clam, sea anenome, starfish, sea weed, coral, snail, mollusk. Play Carnival of the Animals: Acquarium by Camille Saint-Saëns‎ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyFpZ5MZ7kk Establish rules of dance (keep space between others and things, so no touching other things without permission) and demonstrate creative dance movements. Show picture of Saint-Saëns.

Art activity: Make an acquarium or ocean on blue posterboard. Have students look through various books on ocean animals and then draw their favorite on paper, cut it out, and then glue on the “ocean.” All students can then make a rainbow fish with a paper plate. Social Studies – Oceans around the World or Show picture of Saint-Saëns. Discuss part of world where he is from. Show on map.
